“Selfie”

Took this today, and “developed” it using RawTherapee 5.8 on Debian GNU/Linux:

Triggered the camera with the mobile phone, and cropped the picture into a 5:4 format. I used my Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mk2 camera with Mitchie’s Panasonic Lumix 20mm/1.7 lens at an aperture of 1:1.8.

Like always, thanks for viewing.

Cookie dozing again

Continuing to use RawTherapee 5.8 instead of the OM Workspace raw converter for which I’d have to boot into Windows, I made this today:

Cookie dozing again, Mörfelden-Walldorf 2022

I used Mitchie’s 20mm/1.7 Panasonic lens because she has my 17mm/1.8 which is much faster in auto focussing for her videos. I also used colour at the moment for these tests…

Cropped the image into a 2:1 format which is more cinema-like.

As always, thanks for viewing.

Google knows Debian pretty well…

Earlier this month, I wrote about the different flavours of Debian, and noted that you could take (and stay with) Debian ‘testing’ or even ‘unstable’ to have something like a rolling release.

And that’s exactly what Google is doing since a while, and like their article about it shows they understand Debian pretty well. They know about the problems with mixing stuff from ‘testing’ and ‘unstable’ (which is btw what Ubuntu is doing as well), they know about the Debian security team *not* updating ‘testing’, and that not every package from upstream which ends up in ‘unstable’ has CVE reports. And they also supply packages themselves, which is how it should be.

So in that regard, Google was thinking like me – you don’t have to take Arch or Suse’s ‘Tumbleweed’ if you want rolling releases, and going back from using Ubuntu to its own parent can only be a good thing. Good to see professionals working and thinking like oneself 🙂

Found via the Debian micronews blog where Debian developer Laura Arjona Reina posted it.

As always, thanks for reading.

Fremdschämen

Wiktionary says:

1. (reflexive, informal) to feel secondhand embarrassment; to feel ashamed about something someone else has done; to be embarrassed because someone else has embarrassed themselves (and doesn’t notice)

and rightfully so. I’m referring to this article, written by a German about (some of) us Germans. It’s about song lyrics which are sexist, or “loud in volume, unsophisticated in tune and often offensively bawdy in content” as the author has it. Or that they even play down on things like rape. And what’s totally embarrassing about it is the reaction from some of our media, like “Bild” (not a newspaper at all, but dangerous opinionated arsonists), complaining about “censoring” – that is Trump-like dumb, sorry guys.

I’ve seen the word “Fremdschämen” used in English media before, it’s explained in this article for instance.

And yes, not only are these lyrics and German Schlager music in general (or “us” Germans always clapping on the “1” and “3” only) a reason for my own embarrassment, but even more so that reaction of “Bild”.

Sorry about the rant…

P.S.: in Wikiloops, where I am one of the moderators, we have tendencies like these as well, regarding inappropriate content and lyrics. And trust me, decisions of banning and about the deletions of a song don’t ever come easy, but we do have a code of conduct which handles topics like the limits of free speech. Maybe some recording companies should have or at least consider the same before they publish any crap?

Oh, and one nice thing about the article which lead to this blog post is the photograph of the city of Würzburg which they’ve used – very pretty.

Rick Beato on two very different things…

Just saw Rick Beato’s take on “Running Up That Hill”, the famous Kate Bush song which was/is becoming even more popular today due to a Netflix series called “Stranger Things”. Just like Rick, I didn’t watch it except that I saw the beginnings of “Stranger Things”, but found their latest season to be only loud, and not to my taste at all¹. But sales numbers for Kate Bush’s song went through the roof because of it, and that’s a good thing as both the song and the artist are simply beautiful. I’m a bit older than Rick and was around 21 when she came out, and who wasn’t in love with “Cathy” (singing to Heathcliff)? Listen to his very nice analysis of Kate’s song:

Kate Bush & Stranger Things Just Made the Impossible Happen

His second video which I saw almost immediately afterwards is something completely different. This time unlike for Kate Bush I had to even look up the artist (Halsey) he’s talking about – never up to now heard anything from her because I’m not following any charts at all (she seems to be active since around ten years only, and radio is really bad since longer than that). But his video is important nonetheless because it clearly shows everything that’s wrong with music as a business these days. Shook my head in disbelief:

Halsey’s Attack on TikTok Culture (Rant)

How good that I’m not in that business, that’s what Rick also said. Unbelievable, isn’t it?

Oh, and as kind of a P.S.: kids, don’t use or even install TikTok

As always, thanks for reading, and for viewing.

¹I *am* currently watching it, and may revise my quick first judgement. In case anyone is interested, I’ll let you know…
