Some portraits I took

We’re back from our trip to Malaysia to visit relatives there after what was a much too long time, and I haven’t yet found the time to really write something about the journey.

But after putting some family photos on the web and discovering that those who they were made for couldn’t download them, I also put some onto my Picasa page. So here they are, in no particular order:

A longer blog post will follow soon. As always, clicking the pictures or links to them will lead you to bigger versions to download.

Thanks for watching. And thanks to our cute family members for letting me take their photographs. Love you all.

The small self portraitist

Zuleikha really loves my camera remote, which I got yesterday:

A new year, new challenges

Less than two months ago, I bought a new camera. Or rather, I bought two. The first one was/is a Panasonic Leica TZ-7 for Mitchie, then a few days later I decided to get an Olympus E-520 for myself, which together with the two “kit” lenses was quite a bargain at that time. Now Mitchie has an EFL (= equivalent focal length) of 25-300mm in a small pack, while I have 28-84 and 80-300mm EFL in two lenses.

The quality of those is exceptional, if you keep in mind the price at which they came. But of course not everything is perfect: with maximum aperture openings of 3.5-5.6 for the smaller and 4.0-5.6 for the longer lens, they aren’t really meant for indoor available light shootings, so you either need a flash or a tripod, or you need to keep shooting lots and lots of pictures, hoping that some of them are sharp, and your object didn’t move. Also, you have to use ISO 1600 when not using a flash, and so your images will have some “noise” (with film, that meant “grain”).

From selfmade

Since my preferred things in photography are portraits, especially using the available light, I have to get some glass with bigger openings. Olympus have a somewhat famous macro lens with 50mm and f=2.0, which compares to 100mm on full frame (or, in the film days, 24×36mm picture size). Sigma even has one with f=1.4, tho this isn’t as sharp as the Olympus, and probably double the weight (but cheaper). So since after yesterdays fireworks, I took my tele, set it on a “fixed” focal length of 50mm, where it has f=4.2 as its largest opening, and fired away some 250 shots. No flash, and - with the exception of this evening - no tripod. The picture above is one of the better ones from this morning.

For indoors, and even for small kids, 50mm is a bit long already - 42 (equals ~ 85mm) would be better. Hm. Sigma also has a 30mm f=1.4, but with an EFL of 60mm, this is more a standard than a portrait lens. So I guess I want the Oly one. According to dpreview, “every E-system user should own one“…

Oh, and before I forget it: a shot from the fireworks is here:

The model… and… action!

Today, we shot each other. No, not with weapons or in computer games, but with cameras:

That’s fun, papa!

Of course, her photos were at least as good as mine:

That was lots of fun, for both of us. Another portrait of our small one, taken an hour or so earlier:

A new record

One minute. Or so. Then she said:

Papa, kann ich jetzt spielen^Wschlafen gehen? Sei nicht traurig, ok? Tschüüsss…

- and <poof!> - Papa was gone…

Translation:

Daddy, can I go play^Wsleep now? Don’t be sad, ok? Byyyyee…

Just like described before on her (or rather her mommy’s) blog, here. Too sweet ;-) And I just love the pictures on this one. :-)

On a more serious note: she could be ill - in her Kindergarten, they have scarlet fever right now, or chicken pox. Or both. So my girls went to see the doctor today, and they’ll get the results from the doc’s lab tomorrow. Let’s see.

At least, she enjoyed the walk back home in the dark (just from the bus stop) with mummy. She even asked if they could go with the lantern again, hehe…

My girls’ dream car

This weekend - like any other weekend also - I was home in Freising. There were several things to do there, and one of the most important ones was to fix the rear tyre of Zuleikha’s bicycle.

I did however insist on going to the local Honda dealer first, because I wanted to see the FR-V (all links here are to Honda Germany, so the language is German. However, most of the models are sold world-wide, so you should find them in your local language as well).

Our local car dealer didn’t have it. But once we were there, we looked at other models as well. Mitchie didn’t like the Civic - too futuristic for her taste. But she instantly fell in love with the new Honda Jazz. And I have to admit: it’s an exceptional great and small little car. Letting the doors fall into the closed position for instance gives you that low-tuned “thumb!”, which you would expect with much bigger (and more expensive) cars, like a Mercedes or so. No - this one has it also, and starting at around 12.5k, this is real quality what you’d get for your money.

Plus, the interior concept is just astonishing. I’ve never seen such a clever layout on any car I saw so far. It’s a van, it’s a sub-compact, it’s really really roomy inside, this is an engineer’s master piece IMHO. Smarter than a Smart, if I may say so.

Mitchie tried it, because I said she had to, and it fits. She didn’t even try to move the wheel (you can, both in height and distance), or move up and down the front seat (you can do that as well). She just felt good in it, and that’s the point. I’m looking for a car which is meant mostly for my girls, and the intended usage is the city. So this seems to be the best we found so far.

Of course, Mitchie wants an automatic - that’s ok with me. I drove a (Mercedes) automatic gear box while having 12-hour-nightshifts on/in a taxi cab while I studied - and I have to admit that in-town, you just cannot beat a good automatic gear-box. You can have a cup of coffee in your right hand while rolling from the gas station to the taxi waiting area for instance - just not thinkable with a manual shifted car. Automatics are great; the top line of Toyota’s Avensis for instance (the 2.4l gasoline engine) comes *only* with automatic, just like other brands with over 200 or 300hp as well. With so many power, it just seems silly to change gears manually. And even the Formula-1 cars have at least a semi-automatic; means they shift gears with small levers on the wheel.

Ok. So far so good.

Being girls (should I say: “girlies”? ;-) ), they have their favorite color schemes of course. At the moment, this means: pink (ewww!, hehe - well, you just can’t discuss about taste, you could only struggle over it - and struggling is not what wjls do best, like Tigger would say).

And while “phoning” (in fact that means IP-phoning ATM) with our small one, I promised to send a pic of that car in her favorite color: in pink (don’t tell her, but Honda calls that one “cool rose”). So here it is, dedicated to our small one (and to some point also to Mitchie):

Honda Jazz in “Cool Rose”

At least, from the inside, you wouldn’t see much of that:

Interior of Honda Jazz “Exclusive”As I said: a very nice and small and cute little car.

The costs? Well I just calculated the most expensive “line”, which has everything - the biggest engine (1.4l), automatic gearbox, even a sun-roof over most of the car’s length. Plus every other thing you could think of. And that would sum up to some 22k. Lots of money for a small car, yes, but still cheaper than our friend Peter’s VW Polo “Blue Line” Diesel, which is about the same size than this one. Plus these 22k include *everything*, even the kid’s seat, sun shades, navigation, cruise control; everything. To see the actual configuration, download the pdf which was generated from the Honda site here. If you can do without all the gimmicks, and prefer a manual gear box to an automatic one, you could have more or less the same car from about 16k. Which is an exceptional value for the money IMHO.

Almost forgot to tell: the Honda site also has some very cool product videos; the first one I saw seems to be rendered, and if it is, it’s one of the best quality art works I’ve ever seen. The link to that one is here (wmv/mov, ca. 18MB). And the normal full-length product video is also very impressive; see it here (wmv/mov, ca. 42MB). Plus they have a more or less silly “Punk” TV spot for the targeted young German audience, only online here.

So.

Would I drive around in a pink car (not even a pink Cadillac)? Yes, definitely. As long as my Fireblade comes in black… ;-)

I think the future, at least in metropolitan / urban areas belongs to public transport, to something like scooters (maybe electric) and bicycles, and to small vehicles with a clever layout like this one. First hybrid, later electric, or so (Honda plans to use hybrid engines in all of their coming product lines; a Jazz with a hybrid engine *is* on the drawing board already. So what they bring in their new “Insight” next spring may be available in the Jazz until we could afford one). Companies like Toyota and Honda are definitely on the right way, and will generate lots of money. And hey, who would need all the 100hp this little thing offers - in town?

“Phoning” home

Zuleikha singing songs for her Papa (daddy)During weekdays, while I’m in Frankfurt and my girls are in Freising, this is what we do in the evenings: we’re “phoning”, so I can say good night to our small one, and she can see her daddy even if he’s almost 400km away.

I’m using the Asus Eee PC for it, and Zuleikha is sitting in front of Mama’s computer, which has a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000. Both machines are running Debian Lenny, which is still in Beta but runs without a glitch.

These sessions sometimes last only 3 or 4 minutes until the kid decides it’s enough now, grabs the mouse - and <Poof!>, Papa is gone. Today, it was over 20 minutes, and she was singing songs over and over again.

Aaah, the joys of being a father. And tomorrow after work, I’ll be on the way back home again. The little one already said I should stay at home for five days, and work for two. ;-)

Preparing

So - in about 8 days from now, I’ll be moving back to what can be considered more or less the “center” of Germany, at least for workdays. Contracts are signed, and I’ll be part of Big Blue then. Wow.

Anyway: to not lose contact to home too much, and to be able to say “good night” to our small one and all that, I finally ordered an EEE PC for myself. That’s just the right size, the right price, the right everything for the job - plus according to Ben Armstrong’s blog, it should be supported very well by Debian Lenny. A search over the Debian Wiki resulted in 153 hits as of today, in several languages, and the DebianEeePC page gives a very nice introduction into that little device.

Again, just like when Peter visited us, the machine made Zuleikha smile and giggle, it definitely has a “want/must have” effect even on 3-year-olds:

Papa, what’s that?
Ok, now lemme show you something, daddy…

So even if it’s not pink, I seem to have to give it to our little one soon.

More presents

I wrote something like this in August already. When I approached my computer desk today, I found this:

Presents

All in a while, or more often then not, I find presents on my computer desk, like this one:

presents

Hmmm ears like Miffy has them, hairs sometimes those of cats, and then things on the head which are explained as “crowns”. Still - what a nice surprise each time. Life can be so colorful, hm? Thanks, sweetie
