Yeah, I’ve read quite a few comments like: “I sold my [Canon/Nikon/whatever] gear and bought an OM-D”. Seems to happen more often than not.
But on Andreas Manessinger’s blog I found the one of John W. Griggs, and I’m glad I did. Both are photographers who show work I really like. And John has some incredible articles as well. Should you be interested in a camera, you’ll find loads of information at his site.
Both are recommended reading.
Sehr gedank! (If I said that right, lol!)
I agree on Andreas Manessinger’s blog. Also, Giulio Sciorio at “Small Camera Big Picture” http://www.smallcamerabigpicture.com/ is totally sold on the small cameras and was intrumental in my decision to move to a smaller format from my big Nikon’s.
Thanks again for the recommendation.
John
Hehe John – it’s maybe more like “Vielen Dank!”, which would stand for: “Many thanks!”
Yes, I sometimes visit Guilio’s site as well. Or Jordan Steele’s, who moved from a full frame Canon outfit to µ4/3rds. Even a colleague of mine (Patrick Lu from Austin, Texas – we’re both working for IBM) went through different cameras, and kept only the best, like an older Canon full frame, an OM-D, but now he seems to shoot Leica most of the time. That’s all very interesting.
Photos? From working pros? I know lots of good guys in that regard. On my sideline to the right you see people like Kirk Tuck, but I’m also quite often reading Ming Thein, Thorsten Overgaard, even Joe McNally whom I met (and who took my brother’s picture). But there are so many others whose work is good and who would deserve mentioning that it’s probably unfair to even try and begin listing them. Maybe that’s the “pro” part about them; they all can get a consistently good output, regardless of the task you throw at them.
Me? I like to take portraits whenever I can. The rest are just family photos or whatever catches my eye – I still take those cameras everywhere I go. Maybe I should reduce weight a bit, and get a basic OM-D kit with those nice primes as my only (or main) camera.
I do follow Ming, and Robin Wong as well — Malaysia is represented by some very good photographers! I don’t know Thorsten but I’ll look him up. And who doesn’t know who Joe is, though I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting him.
I’m an engineer for my “day job” — if I had to eat off of my photography I’d be a much thinner man, lol. My title is “Process Control Engineer” which requires mechanical, electrical, and software engineering disciplines. Most of my time is spent these days in writing or modifying software for automation, control, data collection, and reporting systems. I enjoy programming — especially for real time systems — very much.
It’s all very well to move to Leica — but my gosh the prices for those systems! I can’t bring myself to make such a leap. I do have a Leica Minilux Zoom film camera which is a clever little beast. It looks like it has virtually no controls — but it fools you. If you’ve never studied one, it will surprise you with what it can actually do. My youngest daughter gave it to me as a gift for my camera collection so no I can say I have a Leica, lol.
I understand – I’m with IBM Cognos support here in Germany, or “EMEA” as they say.
For Thorsten Overgaard, try this site an an entry…
Considering who he has photographed I SHOULD know who he is, lol. I’m too provincial for my own good and live in my own little world I think. Very impressive.
Well yes, Thorsten is definitely a pro and an artist as well. And some of his images are really really good indeed. But I also like his articles on some subjects.
