Bill Beebe mentioned me in his latest article, even in one line with people like Kirk Tuck. And since Bill is a really good photographer as well, whose work I follow since quite some time, I really feel honored about this. I never thought that any of my photos would make that much of an impression onto anyone, and being mentioned alongsides Kirk or Ming – wow! Thanks Bill, and the compliments are given back! I would have loved to show one of your own good photos like this one here, but everything on your Flickr stream I saw said “all rights reserved”, so I couldn’t do that…
About Ming, and his review and article about the Leica X2: here I agree with Bill, it’s not so much the camera I’m interested in, but Ming’s photography simply speaks for itself. A great one; I’m glad I discovered him. Another one, at least equally good, and also discovered while reading Steve Huff, is Thorsten Overgaard, whose work is also truly amazing.
I think that reading and looking at other good photographers’ work helps a lot with understanding and working on one’s own photography. So yes, investing in good books for instance helps a lot more than constantly thinking about the latest and greatest cameras…
Going to museums also helps, and I can hardly wait until I get the chance to visit Museum Ludwig in Cologne again. For those who cannot go there because it’s simply too far, a book with some of their collection – including mostly everyone from Ansel Adams to Piet Zwart can be found on Amazon. I recommend that one for starters.
Thank you Wolfgang, you are worth following and appreciating with all the others listed. In addition to your excellent work it gives me a wonderful perspective of life halfway around the world.
In the future, if you want to use any of my photos in your work, you have my permission to use them. It’s just that in the past, when I was much looser in my control (Creative Commons) I had some folks basically rip some of them off for commercial gain, and I didn’t get a penny nor attribution.
After going back to http://creativecommons.org/licenses it now looks like there are six CC licenses of varying control, two of which I feel comfortable using; CC BY-NC-SA (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike) and CC BY-NC-ND (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs), which is the most restrictive. Flickr supports all six, which they didn’t some while back. I’ve now gone back and re-adjusted my Flickr licensing to CC BY-NC-ND. We’ll see how that goes.
Thanks Bill, it’s really appreciated. Oh, and my photos are under a CC license as well, so I can give back your kind offer – thanks for that as well!
Tja Wolfgang,
